Why do words matter?
This is a great question.
Words have always mattered but I think that we have gotten out of the habit of looking at words as if they have power.
Let me explain that.
Have you ever had someone say something to you that hurt you, that took away your joy or happiness?
That is power.
What about that person who always says just the right thing at the right time?
The words that lift you up, give you courage, make you smile or laugh out loud?
That is the power of words.
Just take a look at the media and the words that are being used in the news and by people in influential positions today.
Are they filled with love and joy or fear and hate?
How is it making you feel.?
Are you feeling hopeful or are you getting worried about the future you imagine is unfolding?
Words have power and we need to remember that today more than ever.
Let me give you another example.
Are you rich or wealthy?
Do they mean the same thing or are they really different?
Anyone can become rich.
Look at some of the people who have won lotteries in various countries!
Are they rich or wealth?
More than half of those people are right back where they started from but they were rich!
So how does wealth differ from rich?
Wealthy people hang onto their money and grow it.
It remains in the family for generations and the principles of wealth are passed from generation to generation.
This is not a commentary on what the wealthy do with their money rather how most of us see money.
The words that are attached to money influence our behaviours around money.
It is necessary to understand the difference so you will understand that the idea that being rich will solve all your problems really is a fairy tale,
Being wealthy on the other hand will give you and your family generations of options.
Let’s look at the other end of the spectrum.
Are you poor or broke?
If you are poor your mindset is going to be different than someone who is broke.
If you are broke it is a temporary situation.
Your mind knows that this is not a forever situation.
You have had money before and you will again.
I am broke today does not mean I am broke forever and will therefore be this way always.
Power in the words.
Poor on the other hand often has the connotation of forever.
We look at different neighbourhoods and judge them on their financial health
and then classify them as poor or rich.
There are people who move up or down that scale but if you are classified as poor and you are treated as poor it is more than likely that you will continue to be poor as you move through life.
Being poor becomes a habit, being broke is just inconvenient.
There is the saying, ” The pen is mightier than the sword.”
I believe this.
Governments have fallen because of words, corporations have failed because of words, relationships have broken because of words, people commit suicide because of words.
Words have power!
Did you ever have a friend, teacher or boss who just made you feel on top of the world?
Someone whose words made your heart sing, who pushed you farther than you ever thought you could go, who believed in you more than you did yourself. who changed your life for the better and because of them you are better?
How about the parent, teacher, boss or friend who always made you feel small, wrong or not deserving, who made you feel like a failure even when you were succeeding, that person that you could never please?
My mother always used to say, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
I know she was parroting her father but I think it is very sound advice.
I am sure that we can always find something nice to say to each other.
Let’s try going through the day and looking for something good to say to each other and saying it with sincerity, honesty and love.
I bet that you can make someone’s day just by saying thank you or letting them know you appreciate them.
Did your son/daughter/partner/coworker do something good today?
Let them know.
The words matter but they need to be honest.
Do you like the way they are dressed or the presentation they just gave?
Randomly tell someone in your life they are appreciated.
You will be surprised how great you make them feel and yourself as well.
That feeling will carry on in you for hours.
Pull out your phone now and text someone in your life you care about and let them know!
Just letting them know you are thinking about them is enough.
They may be having a bad day and you just made them feel like a million bucks!!
YES! WORDS MATTER!
The more good words we use in our life the more happiness we spread and like a virus it spreads!
Tired of the daily doses of fear and hate?
Try adding a voice filled with love, honesty and compassion.
Spread joy and delight!
Your day, your week, your life will be better for it and so will all of us!
Words matter so make yours count today!!
To your health and happiness!!
